A prominent Western Indologist whose encyclopaedic survey, The Wonder That Was India (1954), continues to be instrumental in introducing students to the depth and variety of classical Hindu culture. Basham was the Professor of the History of South Asia at SOAS (University of London), before taking up a post as Professor of Asian Civilizations at the Australian National University, Canberra. He was awarded many honorary degrees, both in India and the rest of the world. Other publications include The History and Doctrine of the Ājīvikas (London, 1951), and A Cultural History of India (editor and contributor) (Oxford, 1975).
