Activities which contribute directly to the wealth of a city or region because they bring in money from outside; that is, export activities. See McGregor et al. (2000) J. Reg. Sci. 40, 1. ‘Activities can be basic, if paid by money external to the region under study, or nonbasic, if they are targeted to the local demand’ (Dentinho and Silveira (2007) Port. Econ. J.).
