It. composer and cornett player. Member of instr. ens. at St Mark's, Venice, from 1576. Publication in 1585 of his book on ornamentation (Ricercate passaggi et cadentie) led to appt. as singing teacher at St Mark's seminary. Became head of the instr. ens 1601. G. Gabrieli's Canzona in echo (1599) were probably written for Bassano to perform. Comp. motets, canzonettas, etc.
