Quick Reference

The mammalian order Chiroptera in which specialized limbs have membranes that act like wings. Bats have public health significance because some blood-feeding species can carry the rabies virus, with or without apparent adverse effect, and can also carry and transmit other pathogens, e.g., histoplasmosis. Insectivorous bats reduce the prevalence of mosquitoes and other insect pests near houses, and their presence is sometimes encouraged for this reason.
