Sonof the German-born sculptor Jan Pieter van Baurscheit (1669–1728), he was his father'spupil, assisting him on works for the JesuitChurch of St Carolus Borromeus, Antwerp(1718–28), and other projects. Influenced by Marot, who introduced the Style Louis Quatorze to The Hague, he evolved his own architectural language in which Flemish and German decorative devices were mingled. His works include the Beeldenhuis, Vlissingen (1730), the Fraula house, Antwerp (1737—largelydestroyed, apart from its reconstructed façade), and the castle of 'Gravenwezel (c. 1730–37—near Antwerp), all in the Régence style, the Rococo Town Hall, Lier (1740–4), and several Antwerp town-houses, including van Susteren-Roose (1745–8) and Grooten Robijn (1745–50), with magnificent interiors. His Van de Perrehouse, Vlissingen (1763–5—now the Court ofJustice), is an essay in early Neo-Classicism.
