Germanlawyer and astronomer. In his star atlas Uranometria (1603) he allocated Greek letters to the main stars in each constellation, usually in order of brightness, and this system of Bayer letters has persisted. He also depicted twelve new southern constellations introduced by Dutch navigators, making Uranometria the first atlas to cover the entire sky.
