novelist and critic, and during 1975–92 Warton Professor of English Literature in Oxford. He married Iris Murdoch in 1956, and wrote an account of their relationship and her suffering from Alzheimer's disease (Elegy for Iris, 1998), and his subsequent widowhood (Widower's House, 2001). His critical works range from The Characters of Love (1960) to The Poetry of A. E. Housman (1990); his novels include In Another Country (1986), a comic work about British Intelligence during the First World War, and Alice (1994), a social comedy exploring sexual mores.
