Quick Reference

These small red beans (also known as aduki beans) are of oriental origin, and are particularly associated with Japan (azuki is Japanese for ‘red bean’). In the West over the past couple of decades they have firmly established themselves among vegetarians' pulsy alternatives to meat, but in the East they often form the basis of sweets, either coated with sugar, dragee-like, or made into a sweet paste.
