cardinal from 1959. A German Jesuit, his life was devoted mainly to Biblical scholarship until John XXIII appointed him President of the newly created Secretariat for Christian Unity in 1960. Bea stressed the importance of the Baptism of non-RCs and it was largely through his influence that the documents of the Second Vatican Council described them as ‘separated brethren’ rather than outside the Church.
