A synthetic analogue of the glycoside antibiotic, rebeccamycin, a potential antitumour drug. Becatecarin intercalates into DNA and stabilizes the DNA-topoisomerase I complex, thereby interfering with the topoisomerase I-catalysed DNA breakage–reunion reaction and initiating DNA cleavage and apoptosis.
