Quick Reference

A slang or jargon term for a patient occupying an acute short-stay hospital bed for a prolonged period to the exclusion of other, and perhaps more acutely ill, patients. The term usually has a derogatory implication, which is unfair because almost all such patients occupy hospital beds for reasons beyond their control.

Subjects: Public Health and Epidemiology.
