(1827–79), New York poet and author of fiction, was best known for her poem All Quiet Along the Potomac, originally published as The Picket-Guard (Harper's Weekly, 1861), a sentimental account of the death of an unknown soldier during the Civil War. It was reprinted in All Quiet Along the Potomac, and Other Poems (1879).
