Layering of sheet-like units, called beds or strata (the terms are not synonymous, see stratum); a bed or stratum being the smallest distinguishable division within the classification of stratified sedimentary rocks. Cross-bedding is a type of stratification in which some sediment layers have an inclined attitude in relation to those immediately above or below. See cross-stratification. Compare lamination.
