Founded in 1916 in Vārāṇasī (Benares) by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, with the support of British officials, Indian princes, and Annie Besant, the BHU is now the largest residential university in India. It was established to provide, inter alia, an education in ‘Hinduism’, derived from the classical Sanskritic culture of the Vedas and the Epics. Some of its teaching takes place in Sanskrit. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was Vice-Chancellor from 1939–48.
