Name of a smali town in Galicia and of the Hasidic dynasty founded there by Rabbi Shalom Rokeah (1779–1855). Shalom was succeeded as both the Rebbe and the town Rabbi of Belz by his son, Joshua, who was in turn succeeded by his son, Issachar Dov, succeeded by his son, Aaron (1880–1957) who escaped the Holocaust to set up his ‘court’ in Tel Aviv. When Aaron died, his nephew, Issachar Dov II, was a little boy, but the Belzer Hasidim adopted him as the rightful Belzer Rebbe, which post he still occupies.
