founder of the Society of St John the Evangelist. In 1850 he was appointed Vicar of Cowley, near Oxford. He was about to go to India in 1859 when Bp. S. Wilberforce persuaded him to remain and take charge of a suburb developing at the Oxford end of his parish. A sermon preached by J. Keble inspired him to found the Society of St John the Evangelist in 1866.
