A genus of palms in which the trunk is solitary and hoop-marked. The leaves are pinnate, with a long crown-shaft, below which appear the much-branched inflorescences. B. nicobarica is widely cultivated. There are 2 species, one native to India, the other to the Nicobar Islands.
