It will consist of two orbiters, the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) to study Mercury's surface and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO) to study its magnetosphere and space environment; the magnetosphere orbiter will be provided by Japan. The mission is named after the Italian mathematician and engineer Giuseppe (‘Bepi’) Colombo (1920–84), who first explained Mercury's unique rotation.
