Bp. of Oslo from 1937 to 1950. He soon became a leader of the Ecumenical Movement. After the Nazi occupation of Norway (1940), he organized resistance; he was arrested in 1941 and remained a prisoner until 1945. He assisted in the foundation of the World Council of Churches.
