An anatomist, physiologist, and biologist, Bergmann was born in Göttingen, Germany, and obtained his medical degree from Göttingen University in 1838. He became professor of anatomy and physiology at Rostock University. In 1847 he proposed the relationship between body size and climate known as Bergmann's rule.
