Succeeded Wiglaf in 840. In view of the unsettled state of Mercia, a coup cannot be ruled out. His origins are not known but he might have been related to king Beornwulf. His queen, referred to in a charter, was Saethryth. By this time Viking raids were becoming severe, and Berhtwulf was driven out by ‘a great host’, which stormed Canterbury and London in 851.
