Albanian President 1992–7, Prime Minister 2005– Born in Tropoje, he joined the Communist Party and became a cardiac surgeon. Berisha moved to lead the opposition in 1989, and in 1992 became President after a landslide election victory. His manipulation of election results led to widespread popular unrest, forcing him to resign in 1997. In 2005, he returned to lead the opposition, this time against the electoral manipulation of his successors, the socialists. Following his election victory, he became Minister President in 2005. Berisha supported economic liberalization as well as closer integration of his country into the EU.
