A religious sect founded at Edinburgh in 1773 by J. Barclay and so called from their zeal in studying the Bible (cf. Acts 17: 10 f.). Berean communities were established in London and Bristol as well as in Scotland, but after Barclay's death (1798) they soon melted away, mainly merging with the Congregationalists.
