Ger. composer and organist. Escaped to USA, 1940, and entered Seminary College of Jewish Mus., NY, 1953–60. Org., Temple Emmanu‐El, NY, 1954–63; Minister of Mus., Washington Hebrew Congregation 1963–77. Early works influenced by Schoenberg and Hindemith but experiences as a refugee from Nazis led to his concentration on Jewish sacred and secular mus.
