Ballet company amalgamated from the three historic Berlin companies, following the re-unification of Berlin: the two that were based at the former East Berlin opera houses, Staatsoper Unter den Linden (State Opera) and Komische Oper (Comic Opera); and the one based at the former West Berlin opera house, the Deutsch Oper (German Opera). The new company, Berlin State Ballet, was established in 2004 under the direction of Vladimir Malakhov, who had formerly been director of the Staatsoper company. Malakhov continued to dance with the new State Ballet, along with Bolshoi-trained Polina Semionova as principal ballerina, and guests such as Diana Vishneva. At its formation, most of the company's 80-plus dancers were drawn from the Staatsoper and Deutsch Oper companies as was its repertory, which alongside the 19th-century classics included works by Cranko, Balanchine, Forsythe, and Bigonzetti. It currently performs in both the Staatsoper and Deutsch Oper houses.
