A method of textile decoration popular in Europe and America in the second half of the 19th century. Canvas with pre-printed or stencilled designs was exported from Germany, mainly Berlin, together with brightly coloured wools. These were worked into floral patterns, portraits, fashionable paintings, and landscapes to form cushion covers, firescreens, wall hangings, and other domestic items.
