Minnesota-born novelist, long resident in Oregon, the setting of Trask (1960), depicting Indian and white relations in the mid-19th century; Moontrap (1962), dealing with mountain men; and To Build a Ship (1963), the last volume of this loosely related trilogy. A Majority of Scoundrels (1961) is an informal history of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company.
