German family of architects. They originated from Leonberg, near Stuttgart. Sylvester Berwart I (d 1553) worked on fortifications in Schorndorf. He had three sons: (1) Blasius Berwart I, (2) Martin Berwart, and Sylvester Berwart II (d after 1565); the last was an inspector of wells. Blasius Berwart I's son, Blasius Berwart II (d ?1610), was chiefly involved in building the fortresses of Plassenburg ob Kulmach and Wülzburg.
