One of the EGF family of growth factors, synthesized primarily as a transmembrane precursor (178 aa), which is proteolytically cleaved to produce the mature molecule that binds to the EGF receptor. It is a potent mitogen for retinal pigment epithelial cells and vascular smooth muscle cells. Several alternatively spliced transcripts have been described.
