An endogenous opioid, secreted by the anterior pituitary, that is more powerfully analgesic (2) than morphine, also causing rigidity and alterations of mood and behaviour. It occurs both in free form and as a terminal polypeptide chain of 31 amino acids in a beta-lipotropin molecule. Also written β-endorphin. See also endorphin, POMC.
