Quick Reference

A gamble is a contract whereby the loss or gain of something of value is wholly dependent on an uncertain event. The morality of gambling, considered as a species of recreation, is disputed. Some hold it to be always illicit, but most Christians regard it as permissible, though open to abuse. It must not be about an unlawful matter, the stake must not be excessive, and it must be for some end other than pure avarice, e.g. recreation.
