German Evangelical theologian. A leading exponent of the ‘Vermittlungstheologie’, he rejected Chalcedonian Christology. After 1870 he helped to draw up the new constitution for the Prussian Church; he supported the Government in the Kulturkampf; and he was one of the chief agents in founding the Evangelische Bund.
