Quick Reference

A socially- and gender-inclusive path to liberation outlined in the Bhagavadgītā, involving complete surrender (prapatti) to Kṛṣṇa as supreme and omnipotent God. Usually contrasted with what are taken to be the other paths to liberation described in the Gītā (karma-yoga and jñāna-yoga), bhakti-yoga is said to supersede or incorporate them. Although the Bhagavadgītā itself does not present these three as systematic or exclusive paths (mārgas), some modern commentators have adopted and adapted the division to chart three distinctive Hindu paths to liberation. See also Bhagavadgītā; bhakti.
