Quick Reference

An ancient name for India, found principally in Purāṇic cosmology where, as the land south of the Himālaya mountain range, it is one of the nine divisions of the continent of Jambudvīpa, and, since it is a karmabhūmi, the only one from which liberation can be attained. It is also associated with the area over which the dismembered body of the goddess Satī falls.
