An outstanding Sanskrit poet and dramatist, three of whose works survive: Mālatīmādhava, Mahāviracarita, and Uttararāmacarita, the latter two based on parts of the Rāmāyaṇa. Uttararāmacarita (‘Rāma's Last Act') is generally acknowledged as one of the greatest works of Sanskrit literature.
