A quasi-diploid line of cells (baby hamster kidney cells), descended from a clone (clone 13) isolated from a primary culture of newborn Syrian hamster kidney tissue. Although fibroblastic in appearance they express the smooth-muscle intermediate filament protein desmin. They have been extensively used as a viral host, in studies of oncogenic transformation, and in cell physiology.
