The personification of the world, and a secondary consort of Viṣnu. In mythology, she frequently needs saving from the asuras and other threats. For instance, when a daitya throws her into the ocean, she is rescued on his tusks by Varāha, Viṣṇu's boar avatāra; and at the outset of the Mahābhārata the gods take human form specifically to relieve the burden of the goddess Earth, who is being afflicted by the asuras.
