In the Vedic tradition, one of the five ‘great sacrifices’ (mahāyajñas), a daily minimal ritual offering by which a householder acquits himself of his ritual obligations to the bhūtas, or disembodied spirits. It usually takes the form of a bali offering of portions of food scattered on the ground.
