Ebenezer Bicheno was born in Newbury, Berkshire on 25 January 1785, the eldest of five children, and died in Hobart, Tasmania on 25 February 1851. His father, James Bicheno, was a Baptist minister and schoolmaster and also the author of books on Biblical prophecy. Bicheno married Elizabeth Lloyd from Newbury in 1821, but she died in childbirth a year later. He was called to the bar in 1822, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1827.
