American writer, served in the Civil War, 1861–5, and afterwards became a prominent journalist. He is best known for his short stories, realistic, sardonic, and strongly influenced by Poe. They were published in Tales of Soldiers and Civilians (1891), a title which was changed to In the Midst of Life (1892; rev. edn, 1898).
