Leading Iranian Shii cleric of the Pahlavi period. Son of one of the principal ulama leaders of the Constitutional Revolution (1905–11). Studied under Mirza Hasan Ashtiyani. Opposed government attempts at deveiling and enfranchisement of women, as well as land redistribution. Allegedly facilitated a coup against the popular prime minister Mohammed Mosaddeq in 1953.
