(8th century), hermit and goldsmith who adorned the Lindisfarne Gospels, as the inscription in it states, with gold, silver, and gems on the binding. The book survives, but the precious binding is lost. The supposed relics of Billfrith were discovered by Alfred Westow in the 11th century and removed to Durham, where the feast of Billfrith and Baldred the hermit was celebrated on 6 March.
