(1867–1946). German architect, celebrated as a designer of houses and fine interiors in the early years of C20, often in a zestful Jugendstil manner. He evolved a massive simplified Rundbogenstil shortly afterwards. His buildings include the Rathaus, Kiel (1903–11), the powerful Kunsthalle, Mannheim (1906–7), and the new University buildings, Freiburg-im-Breisgau (1907–11). In the 1920s he turned to a simplified Neo-Classicism.
