(2000) Nature 403 identify 25 global hotspots, which together comprise only 1.4% of the earth's terrestrial surface, but which, among them, contain 44% of all species of vascular plants, and 35% of all species of four vertebrate groups. Examples include the Mediterranean basin, Madagascar, the Western Ghats, and Sri Lanka.
