The oxidized form of tetrahydrobiopterin, a coenzyme essential for the conversion of phenylalanine to tyrosine, tyrosine to l-dopa, and tryptophan to 5-hydroxytryptophan. It is also an essential cofactor for nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Defects in biopterin synthesis can lead to hyperphenylalaninemia, a disorder similar to phenylketonuria.
