bipartite system

Quick Reference

A system based on selection, where some schools select their pupils by ability while others do not. In England this was typified by the system of grammar schools and secondary modern schools, where the former selected pupils by ability and the age of 11, and the latter provided for those not selected. The bipartite system is still operated formally through the Eleven Plus by some local authorities in England; and continues to operate in practice, if not in name, in areas where oversubscribed schools are able to carefully select their intake. See also Butler Act; tripartite system.
