The weight of an infant at birth, an important indicator of health status. The birth weight of a normal full-term infant is usually in the range 3,000 to 4,000 grams. Low birth weight, usually caused by prematurity, or various diseases, is birth weight below 2,500 grams. See also intrauterine growth retardation.
