Bruising of the eye producing discoloration. The area around the eye is well supplied with blood therefore a blow to the eye or surrounding structures can cause internal bleeding. It is usually not serious and resolves itself spontaneously in a few days, but careful examination is required because it may be linked to a more serious injury, such as a fractured cheek bone.
