black frost

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A frost that occurs without the formation of hoar-frost crystals (i.e. when the atmosphere is dry) and which produces extensive damage and blackening of plants (hence the name). Without a covering of insulating hoar-frost (and the release of latent heat that accompanies the freezing of water), plants are particularly susceptible to damage.
