Employed by the family firm of security printers, Blades, East, & Blades, he developed an interest in early printing and travelled widely, collecting material for his Life and Typography of William Caxton (1861; 2e 1863), the first serious study of England's prototypographer. His papers and books on printing history formed the foundation of the St Bride Library.
